Containers of Hope

CONTAINERS OF HOPE ARRIVE IN ZIMBABWE

In 2008 Oversize Transport participated in a corporate social responsibility programme supporting “Containers of Hope WA”.  “Containers of Hope WA” is a project under the auspices of Cosmos HealthCare and African Outreach which aims to send medical equipment and supplies to Zimbabwe : a nation in crisis. Several million people are facing starvation as years of extreme food shortages, unemployment and economic mismanagement take their toll. The health system infrastructure is crumbling; medical equipment has become outdated and supplies of all descriptions are acutely short. Local medical staff struggle daily to provide basic treatment of any real quality.

Oversize Transport agreed to provide free storage facilities for the medical supplies and equipment being collected for Zimbabwe . Senior management in the company were delighted to have this opportunity to give back to the global community by aiding this medical outreach programme into Africa . We believe that by giving support to this we have brought hope into the lives of many who are suffering in Zimbabwe .

The Containers of Hope project has excellent contacts within Zimbabwe who will safely and equitably distribute these supplies to communities and medical facilities in need, in and around the southern city of Bulawayo .

Saturday 10th May 2008 was an exciting day, as it saw the culmination of months of hard work by Containers of Hope WA in collecting medical supplies. On a very wet Perth morning the Containers of Hope WA team met and were assisted by Oversize Transport staff to pack the containers. Medical supplies were colour-coded to go to two different Zimbabwean hospitals (in the south of the country) before being packed into the container along with anaesthetic machines and several baby warmers, delivery beds, operating table, theatre lights and much needed items of clothing.

The containers left Oversize Transport on 1st of July headed for Fremantle and then by ship to Bulawayo. They arrived and were cleared by customs in early September.

Zimbabwe is reeling under the effects of hyper-inflation and currently has the dubious distinction of having both the highest inflation rate in the world and the lowest life expectancy. The Containers of Hope programme will offer medical help to the needy in this struggling economy. For more information on this project see www.containersofhopewa.org.au
